ENVIRONMENT / MILITARISM:  The Pentagon acknowledges that climate change is an escalating existential threat, yet the US military remains the world's single largest institutional user of fossil fuels and emitter of greenhouse gasses, which further heat the global climate.

A highly visible example of this pollution are the 60+ military air shows annually, where the Navy's Blue Angels and the Air Force's Thunderbirds perform acrobatic stunts in multi-million dollar fighter jets for entertainment and recruitment purposes.

Ending the outdated, expensive military air shows, which many Americans oppose because of air and noise pollution they create, as well as climate impacts, would signal to the country the resolve of the military to take specific actions to mitigate its overall climate impact. Concluding this program would not be to the detriment of operational readiness or the military's avowed function to protect us from threats. The Navy’s and Air Force’s jets are not playthings. In a climate-changed world, it’s time to get serious.

The Pentagon is neither transparent nor accurate in reporting its emissions.  In fact, the US has worked to avoid reporting military emissions dating back to 1997 and the Kyoto Protocol (1st major international conference on dealing with climate change). The military's contribution TO the climate crisis is too big to ignore.  Pollution from military air shows is a highly visible example that most people have experienced.  We can no longer do business as usual.

As citizens we are being asked to be responsible for our own carbon footprints and to take action to reduce them.  Let's demand the same of the Pentagon.
